STOLEN!

stolen snow white

Between my posts on Twitter & my Facebook status, I know I’ve alluded to the stolen Snow White painting, but I don’t think I’ve actually told the full story before. Here goes! A few months ago one of my (super sweet) clients bought the original Fairest of Them All painting, my version of Snow White. Shameless self-promotion sidebar: prints are still available here.

The painting was intended as a Christmas gift for my client’s sister. I delivered it. She had it all wrapped up & ready to go. Then I got an email from her while I was still out of town for our family xmas – her car had been broken into & the painting was stolen! We’ve had our house broken into before (& a couple of attempts on our car too), so I know how horrible it feels. Fortunately all of our stolen items were of the electronic, easily pawnable variety, so there was no sentimental attachment. My client, on the other hand, buys almost exclusively handmade, one of a kind items. This is a huge part of why I like her so much & a huge part of why the story sucks so much. On top of the fact that the items stolen were very difficult to replace, you’ve got the horrible timing of having ALL of your xmas presents stolen right before xmas. Brutal!

I, of course, agreed to attempt a do-over & set out to repaint the original Snow White. That turned out to be a lot more difficult than I expected. I had images of the original to work from, but a scan is not the same as looking at all the layering & texture involved. Plus my monitor color is surely different from the paint I see in front of me, lit by the yellowish cast of indoor tungsten lighting. Did I mention I want a studio space with better lighting? I do. At any rate, here’s the new gal:

Ultimately I’m happy with the way Snow White Part 2 turned out. It was an interesting challenge. The new version is definitely different & had I not been trying to recreate an older painting, I don’t think I would’ve noticed just how much my style has changed over the last few months. Painting the creepy girls was a huge departure, sure, but I’ve also had some other cuter girls since then. Clearly the cartoony, big-eyed look is my style, whether I like it or not. And I *do* like it. Absolutely. I think I like the second Snow White better than the first, actually. (The mister agrees too).

The bee in my bonnet is the way my painting style feels so difficult to change, like trying to write with a different handwriting. I hear talk so often in art forums about the importance of finding your own style. What do they mean by this? How do you paint using a style that’s NOT your own without directly trying to copy another painting (which, apparently, STILL wouldn’t work without some of your own style shining through)? Maybe I’m missing something, but my style seems to have found me. Whether I’m trying to paint smaller eyes or changing up my handwriting by dotting my i’s with little hearts (blech, btw), it all looks like mine. Like me.

And that’s pretty cool.

Have a good weekend everybody! I’ve got 2 new paintings to finish touching up & then I’ll be scanning & posting ‘em. One is a toned down portrait inspired by Audrey Hepburn & the other is a reeeeeeeeedickulously big eyed rabbit head girl. She’s my new favorite. :)

Vancouver Gloating

I had one of those, “I’m so happy to live here!” days today. I walked the puppies to the post office (to mail off a package to a new customer. yay!) & it was so warm out that I just wore a sweater. Flowers are blooming! I’m not so good with the acutal identifying of flowers, but I can tell you there were some purple ones, some yellow ones & some purple AND yellow ones. I shall bring my camera next time.

I’m sure I’ll jinx the lovely Vancouver weather just by posting this & I’ll be resigned to wear my rubber boots the rest of the week, but I couldn’t resist. I talked to my grandma Sunday afternoon & since she reads my blog (hi grandma!), I’m now using the internet as another tool to prod her into flying out for a visit. I saw Blue Jays today, grandma! And we could watch the curling on my big screen TV!!! hehe

edited to add: After some Googling, the birds I saw were actually Steller’s Jays, not Blue Jays. They made bizarre noises and looked exactly like this:

edited (again) to add: The photographer of the Jay photo was sweet enough to comment on my blog! Check out Derrick’s website Deriela Nature Inn for more amazing photos.

The Curse of Marnie Mains

King of the Universe – Marnie Mains

Years ago, back when I lived in Edmonton, my friend Paula gave me a Marnie Mains CD for my birthday. She’d seen Marnie play live, loved her music & had her CD on regular rotation around the apartment. The spirited sassy lyrics are impossible not to sing along with & the CD has been in my go-to mood booster pile ever since.

After we moved out to Vancouver (aside: that was 2 years ago now! crazy. feels like I’ve been here forever), I was thrilled to stumble upon Marnie’s Facebook page. Oh yeah! She’s from Van!!! I’ll get to see her play live, hear new stuff…rad! And all would have indeed been rad, except for The Curse.

I’m not sure exactly when I found Marnie on Facebook, but I’m guessing it has to have been close to a year ago. Since then she has performed TONS of gigs around the city & every single time, something has come up. I’ve still never been able to see her play live. The gig will be Thursday night, the only night of the week I have class. Or on the weekend, the one weekend that my parents are in town. Or I’ll have plans to go, the mister is on board, we’re ready to rock & then I’ll come down with a brutal bug & spend the night by the toilet instead.

The clincher came this week when I was psyched to see Marnie was doing a group jam thing at Chai on W Broadway. I figured it was a cozy coffee shop type place & planned a date night with the mister. He cooked a big dinner, I got all dressed up & we headed down around 9 o’clock. And then we found out it was $25 per person. (!) Plus a donation (!!) as there was some kind of charity thing going on. As a starving artist living in the recession/depression era, I had to go with “ouch”.

For the record, the $25 was actually a really good deal. Aside from the live music, it also included a 7 course buffet-style dinner & I would love to try that place out another time, but that particular night? We’d just eaten. We were thinking more along the lines of a cup of chai or a glass of wine. Drat! Foiled again.

I tried not to sulk on the way home & we did end up having a good night anyway. From the comfort of the couch, we sipped our own homemade chai & laughed our tails off watching Flight of the Conchords. Unfortunately, the curse lives on.

Meet Deedee – the final girl to join the party before being shipped off for my upcoming group show. I was so happy to finish painting this series and get it mailed out that I had to do a little happy dance at the post office as I said goodbye to my babies. I have 5 paintings in the “World of Imagination: Volume 2″ show at the APW Gallery in New York.  See #248 on the list? Yeah, that’s me. w00t!

They’ve got a few other interesting shows that I’d like to enter too, like the sketch show or the custom vinyl toy one.  Maybe all of my paintings will sell and I’ll be able to fly out for the next show! I haven’t been to NYC for 10 years and would soooo love to go back. Think happy thoughts for me!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

valentines day

Happy Valentine’s Day everybody! I’m so happy to see people using the Valentine print-out I made up. Yay!

The boys surprised me with cards, a box of chocolates and some yummy smelling candles this afternoon. Such a sweet surprise! I’ve been so very spoiled this year. Last night we had the fabulous Jen & Joel over for dinner & I was plenty happy to call that our Valentine celebration. John cooked an amazing dinner, J&J brought wine & we stayed up late playing a silly trivia game, Buzz. I couldn’t have asked for a nicer time.

Tonight I’m planning to spend in the studio with my other love. I can really feel the tension & stress build up in my body when I’m not getting enough painting hours in & I’m really looking forward to spending the night just playing. I’ve been spending so much time on homework pieces and recreating a previously sold work that needs to be replaced (remind me to blog about that story!), that I’ve had no real creative time. And isn’t that just what weekends are for?

X0X0,
