Last Show of the Year

blim

Craft show season is winding down, my lovelies! My final show of the year is this Sunday, December 20th at Blim. I’m hoping I’ll get a chance to do some of my own Christmas shopping at this one. And gobble up some of the yummy food that Open Sesame will be cooking too.

Blim Community Market
Sunday, December 20th
Cambrian Welsh Hall
215 W 17th Ave (@ Main St)
11 to 5 pm

Of course, you can order my work from my Etsy shop year round. ;)

After Sunday I’ll be able to pack away all of my craft show stuff until March, which means there will be massive cleaning, organizing & finally Christmas decorating. Oh and cookie baking! Just in the nick of time too. The mister’s folks are arriving on the 24th. Eep!

What’s your favorite holiday tradition?

Portobello West

portobello-west

This weekend is the very last Portobello West market of 2009. It’s a 2 day affair running both Saturday and Sunday, so I’ve had Santa’s workshop kicked into high gear all week prepping for what will (hopefully) be one of the busiest markets of the year. If you’re in the Vancouver area, please drop by and say hello!

See you there!

Handmade Holidays: Hipster Edition

There are so many Christmas gift guides out right now that I’ve got presents bookmarked for the rest of the year. Let me share some of my favorites, starting with handmade gifts for the hipster on your list.

Hipster Stocking Stuffer:

moustache stickers

moustache stickers by Chandar Chandar

I’m not sure when the moustache paraphernalia became a mainstay of hipsterdom, but there’s no mistaking it – hipsters love moustaches. And stickers. Combine the two? Gold! Check out the stickers here and the rest of Chandar Chandar’s odd little shop here.

For the Person Who Has Everything:

St. Expeditus – the patron saint of procrastinators

Heaven Help Us creates amulets for the forgotten patron saints and as soon as I saw the one for procrastinators I knew I was being divinely guided to his shop. Stuck in an office with a horrible cubicle mate? St. Therese, patron saint of people who are annoyed by the annoying habits of others. Sewing? St. Ann. Embroidery? St. Clair. Trekkies? St. Martin de Porres. There really IS a patron saint for everything!

For the Comic Book Geek:

emo green lantern

emo Green Lantern by J Salvador

There is a whole series of these little guys that are so cute. I want them all! Unfortunately, so does everyone else. The artist has had to close his Etsy shop because the limited edition run of prints has already sold out. Still worth taking a peek through his sold section to see the whole gang. Super Emo Wonder Woman? *swoon*

For Your Sweetheart:

julene

framed laser cut by Julene

Julene makes the most beautiful paper cuts with so much lovely detail. Where There Is Love is one of my favorites, but the Beez Kneez is high up there too, of course. If you have a particular message in mind, you can also commission an original paper cut on her website.

For Man’s Best Friend:

jusshar

custom hand knit dog sweater by Jus Shar

Jus Shar makes all sorts of stuff, but if you have dogs that are slightly, um…svelter than the typical S-M-L options allow, what could be better than a custom knit dog sweater? Send her your pooch’s measurements, pick your colors & it will arrive in 2 to 3 weeks. Finding something to keep the pug warm in the winter is tough because he’s not *big*, but he has such a thick neck that he doesn’t fit the small or medium options. He’s pretty much the same size straight through!

For the Vintage Lover:

yarncouture

Victorian knit cuffs by Yarn Couture

These cuffs are so cute I’d want to wear them all year round. I’m picturing them with a pretty blouse or even dressing up a casual jersey top. So fab! Yarn Couture has got plenty of more traditional hand knit goods too from scarves and neck warmers to hats and afghans.

For the Dirty Girls (and Boys):

soap-rehab

caramel latte exfoliating soap bar by Soap Rehab

Handmade soap is one of my guilty pleasures. It costs a little more, but the chance to have a daily dash of decadence is so worth it that I can’t resist the lure at my local craft shows. If you’re buying online, it’s often a good deal to buy in bulk. Soap is heavy to ship just one bar, so sellers will often use those flat rate shipping boxes where you can cram as many bars as will fit for one rate. All of Soap Rehab’s products are vegan too!

For…Me?:

grand old bestiary

Ulysses S. Bison III by Grand Ole Bestiary

I’ve had this buffalo gentleman art print by Grande Ole Bestiary in my favorites list for months now and at only $8.00 for a 5×7, it’s a steal. Hunting for the perfect vintage frame to put him in will be the real task.

Last, but not least:

hipsta-please

hipsta, please button from Bean Forest

Just cuz it’s funny. Bean Forest has got so many cute, funny buttons that I could spend an hour digging through their shop. Excellent stocking stuffers, but you’d better order quick if you want them to arrive before xmas.

Happy shopping!

Craft Show Craziness

Phew! After doing a week long show at SFU, then the madhouse that was Got Craft on Sunday, I’m ready for a good long nap. I let myself sleep in this morning (well, only until 9 a.m., but still a welcome change!) and then took my boys to see a movie. And now? Back to crafting up a storm in preparation for the final Portobello West of the year on December 12th and 13th. It should be a busy one, but probably nowhere near like this:

Got Craft

The first 30 people through the door at Got Craft get swag bags, so folks started lining up at 7 a.m. For a show that didn’t open its doors until 11 a.m. Craziness!

Everyone seemed in good spirits, but being elbow to elbow with that many people really stresses me out. I was happy to be able to hide behind my table, not unlike this:

The SFU show (Simon Fraser University) was a totally different beast. People were there to go to school, not shop (necessarily). It would get busy in between classes and at lunch time, but mostly there were long lulls in between so I got lots of busy work done – making magnets, assembling necklaces for my new lockets & so on. I even had a wee bit of time to shop. One of my favorite vendors was a knitter who was actually spinning her own yarn from fresh bags of wool right there. So cool!

I ended up buying some wooly fingerless mittens, perfect for walking the dogs when I need my fingers free to fidget with their leashes. And the poop bags.

But my favorite thing I’ve bought at Vancouver craft shows this year? Also absolutey the silliest. Allow me to introduce my new pet weasel, Stan:

craft show vancouver

Do you remember these things? They’re just a strip of fun fur with googly eyes, but when you stroke the fur, the static electricity makes it curl up & move as if it’s alive. The (lovely) girl selling jewelry beside me (whose name I’ve forgotten) bought a couple, then my friend Jen bought one & then I finally caved & bought two – one for me & one for the boy’s xmas stocking. I can’t wait to see how the pug reacts to Stan. hehe

Of course there are also plenty of elegant & funky & hip handmade goodies available at these shows, but that will have to wait for another post. I need to take Stan for a walk. :)

Schmancy Pendants

fancy-pendants2

Have I mentioned how much fun I’ve been having making new fancy schmancy jewelry? I’ve been doing the Scrabble tile pendants for a little over a year now, and while they’ll always have a place in my heart (so light & cute & fun), I’m smitten with my newest creations.

Making jewelry is such a different skill set than painting, so it’s been fun to learn something new and experiment with being creative in a totally different way – which beads to use, which charms, antiquing & getting different patina effects…lots to play with!

fancy-pendants1

The new pendants have been popular at my local craft shows, so I’m having trouble staying on top of what inventory I have and getting it photographed and up in my Etsy shop. Since I personally antique the brass setting and add different beads and charms, each one really is unique and needs its own listing. They’ve been selling too quickly, which is, of course, a wonderful thing! :)

I have 2 more days at Simon Fraser University this week, then Got Craft on the weekend and THEN I can get back to focusing on my Etsy shop – which is just about too late for Christmas shopping! The last few weeks have flown by. I’m looking forward to the craft show madness to slow down so I can turn my attention to getting my own house gussied up for the holidays. The mister’s parents are coming out to visit, so there’s a little extra pressure this year. I’m kind of looking forward to curling up with the December issues of Real Simple and Martha Stewart, plus my stand-by cookbooks to plan something special. Yes, I am a dork like that.

What’s your favorite holiday recipe?
